A devotional for couples

Love and War: Devotional for Couples by John and Stasi Eldredge is a short book designed for couples to read together during an 8 week period . I look forward to going through it with my husband. Reading through it, I found it interesting enough, but something seemed to be missing. Then I realized that the authors have written a book called Love and War that this devotional is based off of. I am guessing that the two books would go well together, but I have yet to read the original book.

This book stresses the importance of first having a close relationship with Jesus Christ, which is something that is absolutely vital to enjoying marriage the way God intended. It stresses the importance of commitment to your marriage, and committing yourself to making your marriage all it can be. It reminds us that falling in love is only the beginning- we need to choose, over and over, to love our spouse, even when it’s not easy. Men and women are so different that we can’t expect marriage to be easy, but our differences complement each other, and we complete one another.

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group in exchange for this review.

The Way Home

The Way Home is a movie based on a true story. A two-year-old boy disappears, presumably having wandered off, and no one can find him. Search teams are deployed, and after hours, it begins to look hopeless. Randy and Christal, his parents, have to turn to the only One who knows where their son is- and put their trust in the God who can keep him safe. They also learn a lot about what their priorities should be, and what does really matter.

Our family enjoyed the movie, and it was a good opportunity to impress upon our young child the seriousness of wandering off. The only thing I didn’t like is that there were places that the story line was rather slow and it got repetitious in a few places. Overall, I would recommend this as a good movie for a family to watch.

I received a complimentary copy of this DVD from the publisher through Booksneeze.com. I was not required to write a positive review, and the opinions expressed are my own.

Captured by Grace

Captured By Grace- No One Is Beyond the Reach of a Loving God by Dr. David Jeremiah

Grace- it’s something we all long for, but something that can be so hard to understand. This book explores what grace is and studies the lives of the Apostle Paul and John Newton, author of “Amazing Grace.” It is interspersed with many quotations from the Bible, and each chapter includes a “Moments of Grace” study help.

I really enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it. Grace is such a beautiful thing, both to give and to receive. This book helps one to understand just a little more of what grace really is.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

100 Prayers God Loves to Hear

100 Prayers God Loves to Hear/ 100 Praise Songs, created by Stephen Elkins and illustrated by Tim O’Connor is a really cute children’s book. I got it for my daughter and was hoping to save it for her 3rd birthday, but she saw me open it, and fell in love with it. She insisted that she wants it now, not later. Before she went down for her afternoon nap, she reiterated “Mom, DON’T put it away! I want to look at it when I wake up.”

There are 100 prayers, and 2 CD’s with songs to go with each prayer. Each prayer also comes with a short explanation, and a “My little prayer reminder” verse or saying. The illustrations are really cute, and hold the interest and capture the imagination of a 3-year-old. It is also very easy for a young child to follow along in the book while listening to the CD.

The only thing I do not like is that for me, the mom, after listening to about 15-20 songs, I am ready for peace and quiet. Some of the songs, sung by children, are really good, but some have a heavy beat, and end up sounding more like noise than music. That, however, doesn’t seem to bother my daughter, who insists that I do not turn it off.

Overall I would highly recommend this book for preschool age children.

A Summer Secret by Kathleen Fuller

The Mysteries of Middlefield- Book 1
A Summer Secret By Kathleen Fuller

This book intrigued me, because I know the area that it is set in. Mary Beth and Johnny are the main characters, a 13- year-old Amish girl and her twin brother. Young Mary Beth found an old, abandoned barn to be her refuge- but she couldn’t let her parents know about it, because it wasn’t considered to be safe. Then one day, she realizes that she isn’t the only one who uses the barn- but who is this mysterious person? Will she ever find out? And is it her brother Johnny who is reading her secret diary? Or is it the stranger?
Over all, I would recommend this book, especially for preteens. It gives a picture into the lives and culture of an Amish family without being overly dramatized and sensationalized. It teaches values that are useful for anyone, not just the Amish.

Book Review: John Bunyan by Kevin Belmonte

            John Bunyan by Kevin Belmonte

This book is a part of the “Christian Encounters” series. It explores the life of John Bunyan, providing a lot of background information on the times and cultural situations he found himself in. It gives as many details about his parents, wives, and children as are known, as well as his life before and after his conversion.

I learned a lot I didn’t know about John Bunyan, but it was a little hard to get through the book, as small as it is. There were a lot of facts, but the story line wasn’t that captivating. I think it would be an excellent resource for someone who enjoys facts and history, but it’s not a book that really holds one’s attention.
The part I enjoyed the most was the part of John’s life when he was writing the Pilgrim’s Progress. Excerpts from his books and the story behind his books was probably the most interesting and relevant part of John Bunyan, in my opinion.

Thomas Nelson Publishers provided me with a complimentary copy of John Bunyan as part of their Booksneeze program, in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Giant Eagle 3/11 to 3/17

I didn't get my Giant Eagle ad this week, and I feel kind of handicapped without it, even though I can get the ad online. It's not the same. See a list of deals here.

Also, Cherry Picker tells you how to get a $1 McCormick coupon here.  This isn't commonly known, but these coupons work for the seasoning envelopes that start as low as $1 or so- such as taco seasoning, etc. making them free or very cheap after a coupon.  At least they have worked in the past for me. I am going to try them out at my next Giant Eagle trip to see if they still do. If they do not, I will let you know.  ***I did not end up buying these. The lowest prices were $1.09 and $1.19, and I am hoping to hang on to the coupons for the next few weeks in hopes they have a $1 sale, which they do sometimes.***

Miscellaneous

I haven't been very good at posting any deals lately. I hope it wasn't an inconvenience to anyone. The past month has been quite rough for me emotionally, and when that happens, I don't usually have much to say or much enthusiasm about anything.

Last month I had done a post on my January freebies, and I kept track in February again- I got 30 free or more-than-free items, and I also got two orders of photos, one from CVS and one from Giant Eagle, with a total of 75 free photos. So I think it's definitely worth it to look for freebies and keep track of sites like http://www.moneysavingmom.com/ for all the good deals and freebies that are available.

Random notes on couponing

A lot of the sites to print coupons and get freebies require you to give your email address. I strongly recommend signing up at somewhere like yahoo.com for an email that you use only for this purpose, because some sites generate a lot of spam and unwanted email. I get a lot of emails on my yahoo account, which I glance through, and if nothing interests me, I delete them all. My personal email is for only the email that I really want. Your comments on this blog go directly to my personal account, just in case you wondered!

When printing coupons, you can set your printer preferences to black and white in order to save on color ink, which is most expensive. I have never had trouble with my black and whites. To conserve paper, you can use any color paper you have on hand, and in fact, I have already used paper that was already printed on one side, and printed my coupons on the other. I had no problem with that, either. I wouldn't use anything with my personal information on, though. :) If your barcodes won't scan, it's probably because your printer is not properly aligned. I had trouble when I first started, then I aligned my printer, and have very little problem anymore.

I usually print 3 coupons on 1 piece of paper, even when I'm only printing one at a time. To do this, I print one coupon, turn the paper around, and print one coupon on the other side. This leaves a blank space in the middle. Cut off one coupon, and you can print the third one in the empty space.

Giant Eagle will double coupons with a face value of up to 99 cents. 25 cents becomes 50 cents, 50 cents becomes $1, 75 cents becomes $1.50, and 99 cents would be $1.98. You will notice that some coupons say DO NOT DOUBLE. As a general rule, Giant Eagle doubles all coupons under a dollar as long as the  numbers under the barcode start with 5. If the barcode starts with 9, the coupon will probably not double.

If you ever have any questions, I will be happy to answer them to the best of my knowledge, so ask away!

Not a good week for me to keep up

This computer is so slow, and the other one isn't working at all, so I haven't felt like fighting with it to do any CVS, RiteAid, or Walgreen's matchups. But if you're interested, go to Money Saving Mom or Cherry Picker or browse around to see what this week is like. I know there are some potential freebies at CVS, didn't really look at Rite Aid and Walgreens posts this week.

Pillbury Refrigerated Sweet Rolls Coupon

Go to IE  or FF to print a coupon for 95 cents off Pillsbury Sweet Rolls. The coupons don't expire until April 6, so even if you can't use them right away, you definitely want to print them and hang on to them. This is a GREAT coupon!

Giant Eagle usually doubles coupons, even if the coupon says not to, and in this case, since the bar code starts with a 5, they probably will. Giant Eagle reportedly has them for $1.79, so they should be free after coupon AND through February 17, Giant Eagle will give you a $2 coupon off your next shopping trip when you buy 4 Pillsbury® •Refrigerated Baked Good Products  so if you have 2 computers, this could be a $2 moneymaker. Can't beat that!

Freebies in January

I promised a post on the free products I got in January, and how I got them, so here we are. This does not include samples I got in the mail. I should keep track of those this month, and do a post on that. I got 38 items free, although I did have to pay tax on a few of them.

Freebies at Giant Eagle:

1 Taco Seasoning Packet (Redplum)
2 Bird's Eye Steamfresh Broccoli (SmartSource)
2 Glade Soy Candles (Smartsource) paid $3 plus tax, got $5 in catalinas back= moneymaker
4 small containers of Quaker Oats (printable coupons from 2 computers)
1 Yoplait Smoothie Mix (got a FREE coupon in mail)
1 box Ronzoni Spaghetti (either Redplum or SmartSource)
6 cans of Pillsbury biscuits
6 cans Pillsbury cinnamon rolls -2 transactions, paid $7.80 and got $8 in catalinas= moneymaker- (Smartsource coupons- there were actually better printables at the time, but I used what I already had)
1 bag Stacy's Pita Chips (got a FREE coupon in the mail)
2 Mr. Clean pourables
2 Mr. Clean Sprays -paid $4.44 (including tax), got $5 back (Home Made Simple coupon booklet)
2 Seventh Generation Dish Soaps (FREE coupon mailed from Recycle Bank- 2 different times)- tax only
1 Seventh Generation All Purpose Cleaner (FREE coupon mailed from Recycle Bank)- tax only

CVS
1 3-pack Ivory Soap (P&G insert) tax only ( I liked this, because I use Ivory Soap to make homemade laundry soap)
2 Renpure Organic Shampoos (no coupons) It was a buy one, get one free, and I got to submit it for a rebate for the full price for the one- tax and stamp only

Rite Aid
2 packages Stayfree pads (Redplum) RiteAid had B1G1, and the coupon was B1G1, making both free -tax only

WalMart
2 Johnson's Soap Buddies (Redplum) -tax only

Smartsource coupons come every week except holidays in the Sunday paper. The Plain Dealer seems to have the most in this area. The P&G insert comes with the Sunday paper once a month or so. The Redplum coupons come in the mail, and lately, they have been really, really pitiful =( I get coupons for free products by following Money Saving Mom and other blogs, and signing up for them. The Home Made Simple Coupon booklet is a good one to sign up for- I sign up for it whenever it is available, and I usually can find a way to use them for free or almost free products. Update: Money Saving Mom shows you here how to sign up for several of these.  I'd encourage you to try signing up right now. The Recycle Bank coupons I mentioned awhile back. If you haven't tried it, I would recommend that as well.

And lastly, I also have gotten a number of free books (and more) from Amazon by redeeming my Swagbucks  points. If you sign up and get a friend or friends to sign up under your referrel link, you can get points even faster! Of course, I do have an ulterior motive to get you signed up under my referral link ;) but even before I had anyone signed up under me, I still got 1-2 $5 Amazon cards per month. I thought that was pretty good, too.

One more thing: the die-hard couponers often buy more than 2 or even many more Sunday papers to get even more great deals than you can with only one. You can also get them on coupon trading sites, eBay, and elsewhere. I have never done that, so I can't say how good or bad it is.

My Giant Eagle Shopping Trip 2/2

Today I made a quick trip to Giant Eagle, because I had found a deal I hadn't known about last week.
I got the items below for $6.50 and got $4 back on my next shopping trip. In case you want to do this deal yet today or tomorrow, I'll give you the details.

The cups were not part of the money back scenario, but I did get those for 50 cents. They are on sale for $2, and I had a 75 cent coupon (which doubled) for Solo paper products.

The Nestle's hot cocoa mix is on sale for $1 each. Follow the directions here for $.50 coupons (can print 2 per computer) which will be doubled to make them free. Now, you can stop with that and have your free cocoa, or you can combine it with the Juicy Juice deal, and together the two deals will cost you $6 and get you $4 back. Read on:

At the same site as the coupons for cocoa, you can print coupons for $1 off 2 Juicy Juice. The Juicy Juice (the kind on this picture, not on the coupon) is on sale for $2 each. If you buy 4, your total will be $8, and 2 coupons will bring your total  down to $6. IF you buy 4 Juicy Juices and 4 Nestle's hot cocoa, you will be able to get a $4 coupon for your next shopping trip. See page 4 of this week's ad for details. Now your total is only $12 before coupons, not $15, but this deal is going by non-sale price, so it will work- or it did for me. If you only have one computer and can't get the 4 coupons for the cocoa, your total after coupons will be $8, and you'll still get the $4 coupon off your next shopping trip.

A similar deal would work if you got the Nestles candy (Nestle Crunch Hearts or Butterfinger hearts) instead of the Juicy Juice. It would actually be a better deal, because the shelf price is higher, so you would only have to buy 2 to get the $4 catalina, and you can use the $1 off 2 coupon here. If you bought the 4 hot cocoas and 2 bags of candy, your total would be $7.98 before coupons, and $2.98 after coupons (if you have 4 cocoa coupons) You'd get $4 back, making this a $1.02 moneymaker. Wow, I wish I had seen this before I used my cocoa coupons. That chocolate candy sounds really good!! Oh well, the Juicy juice will make my daughter happy, and I won't be tempted to over-indulge!  Go to Cherry Picker to see more about it. Keep in mind that I didn't do the candy/hot cocoa deal, so I can't say with absolute certainty that it will work.

Now that I've gotten you thoroughly confused, I'll stop! =) Please feel free to ask if you have any questions.

This week's deals 1/31- 2/6

Printables are at coupons.com -the highest value is $1 off 2 cinnamon rolls. You can also get $.30 off 2 Grands biscuits
smartsource also has some, but it's not working for me just now :(
pillsbury also has coupons, including a $1 off 2 Grands biscuits
~sometimes there are even higher value printables floating around- I'll let you know if I find any.

here is a $1 off 1 printable to try. It says I have already printed it, so I can't be sure it works, but it would make the deals here even better!
So the best deal I see is to use buy 6 cinnamon rolls and/or Grands biscuits for $6. Use 3- $1 off 2 coupons.  Your total would be $3, and you'd get a $4 catalina for your next purchase.
-up to $1 money maker (more than that with the $1 printable)   page 6

P &G products
$5 off your next shopping trip when you buy any 4 of the following:

2 for $5
Dawn Dish Liquid 19 or 24 oz.
Mr. Clean Pourables 40 oz
Mr. Clean Spray 32 oz.
Febreze Air Effects Aerosol 9.7 oz

2 for $8
cascade Action Packs 16 or 20 ct.
or Gel or Powder 75 oz.
Swiffer Refills 12 or 16 ct.

there are various coupons from the P&G coupon inserts, or use coupons from HomeMade Simple book. If you've never gotten one, go here to register for a book with over $35 savings. It won't help this week's deals, but it has been very useful to me in the past, and will again be useful this week.

If you have gotten the book, here's what you can do:
Buy 2 Mr. Clean Sprays for $5. Use (2) 75 cent coupons (doubled) and save $3 = $2 out of pocket
Buy 2 Mr. Clean pourables for $5. Use (2) 75 cent coupons (doubled) and pay $2 out of pocket
= $4 total- get $5 catalina on your next shopping trip

If you haven't received those books, check your coupons. I will be on the look-out for printables, but so far, I haven't seen any.
- up to $1 money maker  page 11

Those are the 2 best deals that I see right now. I will be back tomorrow, I hope.

Just one more thing, if you like to receive freebies and sign up for a number of offers, which sites like money saving mom have a lot of, sign up for a free email account with someone like yahoo or gmail, separate from your regular email, so that your regular email doesn't get cluttered. Some places don't generate spam- but some do. I use my yahoo account for almost everything related to money saving, deals and etc. The other account is for personal use. And signing up for freebies can be worth your time- just today, I got 3 Atkins bars in the mail- Kierra and I had one that tasted like a candy bar- not bad!

Swagbucks

Search & Win

Another program I use to gets points for rewards is Swagbucks. If you do any amount of searching on Google and other search engines, Swagbucks will give you points to redeem for gift cards. After I get 45 points, I redeem them for a $5 gift card for Amazon.com. You can also redeem the points for other things, as well. I usually earn 2-3 points per day, so I get 1-2 cards a month, or $5-10. Not a way to get rich quick, but it is fun to get something back for the searches I do. The only downside is, it's not quite as good of a search engine as google, but seeing that google doesn't reward me, I can live with that. If you are interested, sign up here.

Recycle Bank and Kashless

Go here to moneysavingmom to find out how to get points to redeem for free products and high value coupons. I did the Recycle Bank thing awhile ago and I got a coupon for free Seventh Generation dish soap (I purchased at Giant Eagle) and 5-$1 coupons for any Coke product- just waiting on the 2 liters to go on sale for $1 each now! And this all cost me nothing but a little bit of my time.

***I just checked my recycle bank account- I got the 300 points from Kashless! Off to order some new coupons!***

SC Johnson Rebate

Click here for a printable rebate on any of the following Johnson products purchased by June 30, 2010:

• Ziploc®
• Glade®

• Windex®

• Scrubbing Bubbles®

• Pledge®

• Shout®

• Fantastik®

• Drano®

• Raid®

• Off®

• Saran™

• Nature’s Source

This is a great way to make money on some Johnson products you can occasionally get for cheap or free with coupons and sales. You can do up to 3 rebates per household, and it does work- I got my first $5 check awhile back. The main catch I see, is if you buy more than 3 products per transaction, you can't use 2 rebates and only 1 receipt, because you can only send in one rebate in one envelope.

My Giant Eagle Trip

Today I went to Giant Eagle for the last day of this week's sale. Before I went, I made a list of everything I wanted to buy, collected the appropriate coupons, and figured out how much it was going to cost. I like to get within 50 cents, so at the register, I am tipped off immediately if it's not very close to what it what I had in mind. I also picked up a couple items I didn't have figured into the total. Like the lonely bag of rice chips on the clearance table for $1.49- I knew I had a one dollar coupon, so I dug that out- for 49 cents, I would try something new. I thought I double-checked my coupons before I checked out, and I knew my total was supposed to be about $14 plus tax for a couple non-food items. So when my total came to well over $15, I was a little surprised, but I had watched her ringing up everything, and it all looked right.

This is where the crazy coupon lady comes in! I went out to the car, checked my receipt meticulously, then discovered the coupon for the rice chips in my purse! No wonder my total was high! I had put in a couple coupons that I didn't actually use, so I had thrown them into my purse before I got to the cash register, and the coupon I needed accidentally went in, too. :( Oh well, $1 won't put us in the poor house, I guess!

I had 2 freebies today, right up front- 2 bags of Birdseye Steamfresh vegetables for $1 each, minus (2) 50 cent coupons, doubled. The 50 cent Birdseye coupon is usually in the papers about once a month, and GE often runs the $1 sale about that often, too. The other freebie was the 4 containers of Quaker Oats I mentioned yesterday.

I had a money maker today, too. I paid $6 for 2 Glade candles. There had been a coupon to save $3 off 2. I paid $3 out-of-pocket, and got not one, but two catalinas- $3 off my next shopping trip thanks to Glade, and $2 thanks to SC Johnson, the company that makes Glade. So I made $2 buying them, plus I get to submit my receipt for a $5 rebate when you buy 3 Johnson products.   I only have to buy one more item to meet those requirements. I'll try to post the link for those rebates yet today- they go really well with some sweet sales/coupons deals. ***just noticed on my catalina that you can get the $3 catalina until the 24th of this month, even though today is the last day for the $2 one. So it's still might make for free candles, depending on the price,  if you have the 11/22 Smartsource coupon for $3 off 2 Glade products. esp. when paired with the rebate. Go here for more details***

My shopping trip today wasn't the most thrifty ever. I was stocking up on yogurt again. Per ounce, yogurt isn't extremely cheap, but my daughter loves it so much. She is never happier than if she can have cereal and yogurt for breakfast. I also bought 2 boxes of cold cereal for $1.50 each. I know some couponers won't buy cereal unless they can get it for $1 or less, but $1.50 is about the best I can ever do around here. Maybe it's the area? Does anyone know how to get cereal for less than that on a regular basis? I would love to know how and where!

The rest of my purchases weren't anything newsworthy ;)

I'll try to post the Giant Eagle deals starting tomorrow as soon as I can. Stay tuned!

Starting With Coupons

My favorite money saving sites:

http://www.moneysavingmom.com/ -an awesome blog. She is just about the best blogger out there, in my opinion! She's clear, concise, and positive. Covers CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens.

http://www.ccherrypicker.blogspot.com/ - covers Giant Eagle

Sites for printing coupons
coupons.com

smartsource

redplum

brick-coupons

Our area gets the direct mail Redplum inserts (not every week). As I hear it, the Plain Dealer seems to have the most Smartsource coupons of the local papers. The Tribune Chronicle doesn't have half as many, I know that from personal experience. The Plain Dealer also has P&G coupons about once a month, and sometimes has General Mills or other coupon inserts. The Sunday paper is better than the Smartsource and Redplum websites. Unfortunately, too often the really good coupons are not published on those websites. Some couponers get multiple Sunday papers so they have a better stash of the good coupons.

I save pretty much all the coupons I get- because you never know when it might help with a really sweet deal! I don't usually print coupons unless I am pretty sure I will use them. And speaking of printables, you can save on printing by doing 2 things- set your printer to black and white- I've never had a problem with those being accepted- and you also can use paper that has been printed on one side, or colored paper. I've never had trouble with that, either, and it helps not to buy new paper all the time just for coupons. And one more thing on the printables- sometimes an ad will print beneath the coupon, hogging ink. I like to stay right by my printer, and if it starts printing an ad after the coupon, I hit cancel on the printer, and it stops the rest of the ad from printing.

A Giant Eagle freebie

***Just a quick bit of information, these are the smaller containers of oats, not the regular large size. I don't know if that makes a difference to you or not. I got them free, so it didn't matter to me***

Want some free or cheap oats? Buy Quaker Quick or Old Fashioned Oats- 4 for $6 (1.50 ea). Get $2 off when you buy 4, equals 4 for $4 or $1 each. Here are links for $1 off each. IE  and firefox. You can print 2 per computer, so if you have 2 computers, you can print 4 and get them free! Otherwise, they are 50 cents each.  This deal is running from January 7-20.
